Noteworthy

John C. Greene is Professor of English and a graduate of University College, Dublin, and The George Washington University. He has published several books, most recently: Theatre in Dublin, 1745-1820: A History, 2 vols., Bethlehem, PA: Lehigh UP, 2011; Theatre in Dublin, 1745-1820: A Calendar of Performances, 6 vols., Bethlehem, PA: Lehigh UP, 2012. Earlier books are The Plays of James Thomson (1700–1747), NY: Garland, 1987; The Dublin Stage 1720–1745 (with Gladys Clark), Bethlehem, PA: Lehigh UP, 1991 (which one first prize in the Lehigh U Press manuscript competition); and Theatre in Belfast 1736–1800, Bethlehem, PA: Lehigh UP, 2000. He has also published numerous articles on Irish theatre and culture, including five biographies for the new Dictionary of National Biography (NY: Oxford UP, 2004). His current interests are 18th-century Irish actors and acting. He was Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Irish Studies at The Queen’s University of Belfast from 1981 to 1988, where he directed the Belfast Newsletter Index, 1737–1800 project, the first online, interactive computer database of a major 18th-century newspaper. He was awarded a J. William Fulbright research fellowship at the National Library of Ireland in 1996-97, an American Society for 18th-Century Studies Research Fellowship at the Houghton Library, Harvard University (1998-99), and was named Distinguished Professor at UL Lafayette in 1996 and Flora Levy and Board of Regents Endowed Professor of English (2000-2004).
