is a friendly,
energetic community of faculty and students who enjoy a lively

| Folklore | |||||||||||||||||||
The Departments of English and Modern Languages offer courses and concentrations
in folklore studies for students who are pursuing degrees in
English and Francophone Studies. In both departments, folklore is an integral
component of the study of language, literature, and culture. The programs
provide professional training in folklore leading to further graduate work
as well as careers in teaching, research, and public-sector folklore. |

Students studying linguistics at UL-Lafayette can select from a broad range
of courses, including semantics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics,
discourse analysis, and first- and second-language acquisition. The Lafayette
area, with native speakers of Cajun French and
varieties of Creole French, provides a rich source of data for
students interested in dialectology, languages in contact, Creole
studies, and other sociolinguistic phenomena. |

| Literary and Cultural Studies | |||||||||||||||||||
Literary and Cultural Studies at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette
is the binding
glue of the graduate program. For many of us, it’s at the intersection
of literary and cultural studies from which the greatest intellectual excitement
emerges. Students opting for a concentration
in literary and cultural studies combine generalist with
more specialized coursework in their time at the University
of Louisiana. This balance, we believe, is crucial to today’s professional
markets, where individuals with the ability to teach
across composition, literature surveys, and specialist courses
possess a crucial advantage. |

and writing laboratories, and the study of linguistics. |
