Linguistics
 
Students studying linguistics at UL-Lafayette can select from a broad range of courses, including semantics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, discourse analysis, and first- and second-language acquisition. UL’s nationally recognized Computer Science program, the Departments of Cognitive Science, Psychology, and Communicative Disorders all offer courses that permit students to pursue a wide variety of interests and applications. The Lafayette area, with native speakers of Cajun French and varieties of Creole French, provides a rich source of data for students interested in dialectology, languages in contact, Creole studies, and other sociolinguistic phenomena.
 
M.A. students who select the Linguistics emphasis take a minimum of four courses in linguistics, one course in five of the six literary periods, and one additional course from a specified group (for non-thesis option). Ph.D. students prepare a course of study with their advisor, including 18 hours in linguistics. For more information about the program or application process, contact:

Job Placement
 
Graduates majoring or minoring in the Linguistics concentration have found tenure track positions at private and public universities and colleges in Oklahoma, Georgia, Louisiana, Arkansas, North Carolina, Michigan, and Texas.
